6 tips to consider when applying for SDA
What is Specialist Disability Accommodation?
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is designed to help people with very high support needs who require specialist housing that meets their disability-related needs.
SDA can include but is not limited to, features such as wheelchair-accessible bathrooms and kitchens, ceiling hoists, and wider doorways and hallways. People who are eligible for SDA must have an assessed need for Specialist Disability Accommodation as part of their NDIS plan.
6 tips to consider when applying for SDA
When applying for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), there are a few things you will need to keep in mind. Here are 6 tips to help you through the process:
- Make sure you are eligible for SDA. To be eligible, the NDIS must first assess you for SDA. It is important to familiarise yourself with the NDIS SDA Eligibly criteria.
- Start Gathering all the necessary documentation. This may include your latest medical assessments (such as Occupational Therapy Reports, or letters from Specialists), proof of income, and any other supporting documentation.
- Request a Home and Living Supports review. To trigger an SDA review, the NDIS asks that you submit the Home and Living Supports Form. This should be done within 100 days of a plan end date, or at the time of a Change in Circumstances
- Start your search early. It can take some time to find the right place, so start looking as soon as you can.
- Use all available resources. Talk to your Support Coordinator and look online at sites like Nest and Housing Hub.
- Visit potential options. Once you have narrowed down your choices, schedule visits to each option to see if these options might suit your needs.
Keep these things in mind when applying for SDA and it will help you find the right place to live.
