What is Specialist Disability Accommodation?
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is housing designed to meet the needs of people with high support needs arising from their disability. SDA can include features such as a personal care area, a communal kitchen and living area, or other features that would support a person to live as independently as possible.
How much do I have to pay to live in SDA?
You will need to cover the cost of your lodging, which is called ‘rent’, as well as your living expenses. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) will fund a reasonable amount towards the cost of your SDA, based on your individual needs and circumstances. For more information about how rent is calculated, check out the SDA Operational Guidelines.
How do I get SDA in my NDIS Plan?
You need to have an assessment of your housing needs and confirm that you meet the SDA criteria as set out in the NDIS SDA Guidelines. You can ask your LAC or Support Coordinator to organise this for you, or you can contact a registered NDIS provider who can assess your housing needs.
